Thursday, June 10th 2004:

In a short rain break we managed to pack our tent in a reasonable dry state. It did not look like it would finally stop raining anyway...

So we started towards Gudvangen, where the ferry departs for a 2 hours´ cruise through Naerøyfjord and Sognefjord to Kaupanger. The street to Gudvangen climbs over Stalheimskleiva, an extremely narrow serpentine street with breath taking views when descending.

In Gudvangen we entered the ferry. Unfortunately the weather had not improved, but at least it did not rain all time. And in some special way the deep hanging clouds had their own charm.

Towards the end of the cruise the weather became slightly better, and in the late afternoon here and there one could even see a few little blue spots in the sky.

We drove along one side of the Lustrafjord to Skjolden, and then on the opposite side back to Norway´s eldest stave church in Urnes. This street too was very narrow, so it took us nearly an hour for some 30 kilometers.

The street to Urnes

After a very quick photo stop we just reached the last ferry from Urnes to Solvorn. Back on the "right" side of the fjord, we rented a room in an appartement house near Hafslo. The house had a shared kitchen, but since we were the only guests for today we could really spread out.

On Friday we wanted to do another hike, this time to the Austerdalsbreen glacier. =>
